LOVE IS STRANGE by Ira Sachs

The Plot: Ben (John Lithgow) and George (Alfred Molina) are a gay couple who decide to marry after being together for almost 40 years. After the marriage, George is fired from his teaching job and, while they sell their apartment and look for a cheaper one, they are forced to live separately in friend’s houses.

The cast: As the gay couple, John Lithgow & Alfred Molina share a fondness and a complicity that goes behind the screen and makes them very human. It’s difficult for us not to get emotionally involved in their life and the difficulties they are facing. They are backed up by a good supporting cast, where a very real Marisa Tomei also shines as Ben’s nice.

The Movie: Although our society is supposedly more open to homosexuality, the truth is that there aren’t many genre movies and, even more rare, gay movies that deal with an older gay couple. In that respect, this drama by Ira Sachs is quite original and gives us a sad and melancholic story about a nice gay couple, whose best years were left behind and who don’t know what the future has in store for them. I wish this was a better movie, but the long music scenes drag the action and, although they give the movie a kind of poetic quality, they end up stealing space to this pretty and bitter love story. Even so, this is a rare and very human portrait of a reality that is rarely shown in movies. I believe gay and straight couples will relate to it.

O AMOR É UMA COISA ESTRANHA (Love is Strange) de Ira Sachs

A História: Juntos há quase 40 anos, Ben (John Lithgow) e George (Alfred Molina) decidem casar. O casamento leva a que George seja despedido do seu cargo de professor e, enquanto vendem o seu apartamento e procuram um mais barato para viverem, vêem-se obrigados a viver separadamente em casa de amigos.

O Elenco: Como o casal gay, John Lithgow e Alfred Molina partilham um carinho e uma cumplicidade que ultrapassa o ecrã e os torna muito humanos. É difícil não nos deixarmos envolver emocionalmente na sua vida e nas dificuldades que estão a viver. A rodeá-los, um bom grupo de secundários dá-lhes o apoio necessário, com destaque para uma real Marisa Tomei que brilha como a sobrinha de Ben.

O Filme: Apesar de a sociedade, supostamente, aceitar melhor a homossexualidade, a verdade é que não há assim tantos filmes do género e, mais raro ainda, um filme dessa temática que se debruce sobre um casal gay de idade avançada. Nesse aspecto, este drama de Ira Sachs é original na forma como pega no tema e nos dá uma história triste e melancólica sobre um simpático casal gay, cujos melhores anos ficaram para trás e que não sabem o que lhes reserva o futuro. No entanto gostava que o filme fosse melhor, pois as longas cenas de música arrastam a acção e, apesar de lhe conferirem um ar poético, roubam espaço a esta bonita e amarga história de amor. Mesmo assim, é um retrato raro e humano de uma realidade que raramente chega aos filmes. Acredito que tanto casais gay como heterossexuais poderão identificar-se com o filme.
