CAROL by Todd Haynes

The Plot: Therese (Rooney Mara) is a young woman who works in a big department store. During Christmas she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), to whom she sells a toy train. They feel attracted to each other and that will complicate their lives.

The cast: Cate Blanchett shines like a true Hollywood star and her Carol is a sophisticated, sensitive and independent woman; her warm voice does the rest. At her side, also shines Rooney Mara (who, in this movie, reminded me of a young Jean Simmons); her Therese is naïve but keen and convinces as a woman seduced by Carol’s flame. The rest of the cast is good, but it doesn’t have a chance next to this two fabulous actresses.

The Movie: Like what happened with FAR FROM HEAVEN, director Todd Haynes reminds us of Douglas Sirk’s colorful melodramas. This story about the passion/seduction between two women is visually brilliant, helped by Edward Lachman’s atmospheric cinematography, an accurate recreation of the time, fascinating costumes by Sandy Powell and the actresses are masterfully directed by Haynes. But I felt a lack of excitement; it’s all too restrained for my taste. The fact that many of the scenes are seen through windows, made us feel like voyeurs. It’s almost like it isn’t allowed for us to get emotionally connected with the characters; we can see them but not feel them, they are unreachable. I liked the movie, but I had bigger expectations.

A História: Therese (Rooney Mara) é uma jovem que trabalha nuns grandes armazéns. No Natal conhece Carol (Cate Blanchett), a quem vende um comboio de brincar. Entre as duas nasce uma atracção amorosa que lhes vai complicar a vida.

Os Actores: Cate Blanchett brilha como uma verdadeira estrela de Hollywood, tornando a sua Carol numa mulher sofisticada, sensível e independente; a sua voz quente faz o resto. A seu lado, também brilha Rooney Mara (que neste filme me faz lembrar uma jovem Jean Simmons); a sua Therese é ingénua mas perspicaz e convence como uma mulher seduzida pela chama de Carol. O restante elenco é sólido, mas apaga-se perante estas duas actrizes.

O Filme: Tal como havia feito com FAR FROM HEAVEN, o realizador Todd Haynes faz-nos recordar os melodramas coloridos de Douglas Sirk. Esta história sobre a paixão/sedução entre duas mulheres é visualmente brilhante, para o que muito contribui a atmosférica fotografia de Edward Lachman e a cuidada recreação de época (com um guarda-roupa fascinante de Sandy Powell), e as actrizes estão magistralmente dirigidas por ele. Mas senti que lhe falta comoção, é tudo demasiado contido para o meu gosto. O facto de muitas cenas se verem através de janelas, faz-nos sentir voyers; é quase como se não nos seja permitido  aproximarmo-nos emocionalmente das personagens, podemos vê-las mas não senti-las, elas são-nos inatingíveis. Gostei do filme, mas ia à espera de muito mais.
