THE DANISH GIRL by Tom Hooper

The Plot: Copenhagen in the 20s. Gerda (Alicia Vikander) and Einar (Eddie Redmayne) are a young and happy couple of artists. One day, while modeling for his wife, Einar gets in touch with the woman inside him and things change forever. With the support of Gerda, Einar will try to be the woman he feels he is.

The Best: The scene where Einar undresses in front of a mirror and hides his manhood to become a woman. The beautifully poetic last scene.

The Worst: I feel director Tom Hooper should have given the story more conflict; everything is too light and pretty. In fact, visually, the film is very beautiful to watch, but also a little bit too long.

The cast: It’s true, I’m not very fond of Eddie Redmayne; his mannerisms are a little irritating. Anyway, his usual androgynous looks are a match for the character of Einar/Lili and I think he delivers his best work to date. But for me, Alicia Vikander gives the best performance of the movie; she is touching, funny, passionate and real.

The Movie: I know the main subject is suppose to be the story of the first transgender in History, but for me the main subject it’s the love his wife feels for him. The character of Gerda is much more rich and interesting. We can feel her pain and her confusion. She loves him so much that, even knowing she will loose him in the process, she’s willing to help him achieve his goal. For me, Gerda is the heart and soul of the movie and a good reason to go and see it.

A História: Dinamarca, anos 20. Gerda (Alicia Vikander) e Einar (Eddie Redmaune) são um jovem e feliz casal de artistas. Um dia, enquanto serve de modelo à sua esposa, Einar reencontra o seu lado feminino e tudo vai mudar. Com o apoio de Gerda, ele vai tentar transformar-se na mulher que ele sente que é.

O Melhor: A cena em que Einar se despe em frente de um espelho e esconde o seu sexo de forma a ser uma mulher. O bonito e poético final.

O Pior: O realizador Tom Hooper devia ter dado mais conflito à história. É tudo muito bonitinho e levezinho. A verdade é que, visualmente, o filme é bonito de ser ver, mas também um pouco demasiado longo.

Os Actores: É verdade, não sou grande fã de Eddie Redmayne: os seus maneirismos são um bocado irritantes. Mas o seu usual ar andrógeno é perfeito para o personagem de Einar/Lili e ele dá-nos o seu melhor trabalho de sempre. Mas para mim, Alicia Vikander dá-nos  a melhor interpretação do filme: ela é comovente, divertida, apaixonada e real.

O Filme: Eu sei que o assunto principal é o caso do primeiro transsexual da História, mas para mim o principal assunto é o amor que a sua esposa sente por ele. A personagem de Gerda é muito mais rica e interessante; nós sentimos a sua dor e a sua confusão. Ela ama-o tanto que, mesmo sabendo que o vai perder no processo, está disposta a ajudá-lo a realizar o seu objectivo. Para mim, Gerda é a alma e o coração do filme e uma boa razão para irem ao cinema.
